SMC Networks is the latest company (joining D-Link, Linksys, Netgear, Buffalo, Belkin, TRENDnet, ASUS, and ZyXEL) to offer products supporting Draft-N, the not-quite-fully-backed 802.11n specification (all the products are based on the 1.0 draft). The company promises backward compatibility with 11b/g — which hasn’t been a given with all the products out — plus high speeds (300Mbps). Intel’s new WiMax chip, the Connection 2250, debuted in Boston this week. They’re calling it the first “dual-mode baseband” for WiMax, as it supports both fixed and mobile WiMax in a single product. The firmware upgrade to make the 2250 chip support mobility (802.16e) can happen over the air. The chip’s first customer is Motorola, which is building it into a new, data-only customer premises unit, the CPEi 200 series. Palm has unveiled the latest model in its Treo smartphone line, with a lower price designed to expand the line’s appeal beyond business users.

The Palm Treo 680 is a quad-band world phone that features e-mail, Web browsing, messaging, and multimedia options. According to Palm, carriers around the world will announce additional product details, availability, and pricing in the next few months.

The phone will be available in four colors — crimson, copper, arctic, and graphite — and for a limited time will come bundled with a free trial subscription to the Yahoo Music service.

HTC has unveiled its autumn range of Windows Mobile-based handsets, including a long-rumoured BlackBerry-like device called the S620 or “Excalibur”. The lineup also includes a dedicated navigation handheld, a 3G/HSDPA handheld and a candybar-style GSM handset. The devices are aimed mainly at the European market, where HTC has a growing presence, and will be available in September or October.
